[ASAS] Reiji’s Memorial 02: running on the periphery of summer

So after months of collecting screenshots of Reiji’s memorial, I finally took the time to roughly translate them thanks to Google Translate’s OCR and finding a Chinese translation of it. I’m not literate enough in either language (and probably will never be) to translate this word to word but at the very least I can provide and interpret a rough summary of his memorial. If anyone would like to correct me on mistakes, please do so! The link to the original memorial is here.

The memorial is about a memory Reiji mentions in his A Route in All Star After Secret. It is about the time during his student days at Saotome Gakuen when Reiji and his friends ran in a marathon, but ditched it midway to play in the river.

Summary under the cut!

On that hot midsummer day, they were running a marathon around the school. They ran a considerable distance on the vast campus but soon their pace slowed down and became sparse.

Reiji, feeling tired and weak from the heat, stopped running first to lay down on the cool grass. Hibiki scolds him for stopping but no sooner after he said that, he sat down on the grass himself to rest from the heat and Reiji laughed at him.

Aine and Kei found them and stopped. Aine seemed less exhausted because he trained regularly. Kei was never the energetic type and was probably the most exhausted out of them. However, his spirit was too stubborn to show it.

Reiji told them it was too hot so they were resting in the grass and invited them to join them. Kei is reluctant.

To convince them, Reiji rolls around in the grass to show them how cool and nice it felt. Aine is convinced and laughs, saying it couldn’t be helped and sat down with them. He convinces Kei to also sit down with them for a little break. Kei still looks reluctant but listens to Aine, after the other tugs his jersey.

It’s still hot so Hibiki throws off the jacket of his jersey. Reiji gets an idea and before Aine could stop him, he took off his sneakers and jumped into the river.

He shouts out how cool and nice the water was and the three of them looked at him in envy. But then Reiji realizes his entire jersey was soaked because he didn’t tie it up. Hibiki ties his hem up and jumps in the river, commenting how cold it was and Reiji agreed. They both beckon Aine and Kei to join in.

Kei doesn’t want to jump into the river but Aine thinks it looks comfortable. The other whined to Aine, but agreed reluctantly when he suggested the two of them can jump in together. Reiji noted that Kei could never deny a request from Aine.

They both tie up the hems of their jerseys and jumped into the river, with Aine gently pulling Kei’s hand. They agreed Reiji was right– the water felt great. Aine smiled and laughed, soon together with everyone. It was a moment that Reiji and them had seen many times, that they were together as one and that Reiji was one with them.

Suddenly, Reiji yells out he wanted to give them a present and splashes his friends with water to surprise them. They get soaked and in retaliation, all three of them splashed water back at him with no mercy.

Soon, it became a splashing competition for a winner and all of them were splashing at each other. The drops of water that splashed in the sunlight’s reflection looked like gems.

The four boys were having so much fun in their splash fight that time had passed by before they realized it. However, they stopped when they heard a loud voice shout out to them. All four of them looked up reflexively and froze on the spot in fear.

It was their senpai Ryuuya, arms crossed, unamused. He asked them what they were doing and why weren’t they running anymore.

The boys, unable to find an excuse, exchanged glances at each other, before running away from him. An angry Ryuuya yells at them to wait and come back.

Reiji comments he wasn’t a fool to listen and wait when Ryuuya was being so scary. The group reaches the other side of the riverbank near the bridge before stopping. Exhausted, they started laughing together.

Hibiki: “He was super angry, huh?”

Kei: “Well, obviously!”

Aine: “But it was interesting, was it not, Reiji?”

Reiji: “Yes, yes! It was the best fun ever!”

And the four boys ran again, laughing out of breath.

They ran across the road, leaving behind four sets of wet footprints into the ground, side by side.

[TL Note]: I was in a rush to finish it within two days so there may be grammar mistakes here and there. The last page I actually translated completely with the dialogue because I felt it was very significant.

I personally feel this memorial gives a lot of insight on how close Reiji’s old friends were and how much more devastating Aine’s disappearance was. It’s because of his interactions with his old friends, that it shaped Reiji to becoming the person he is today.

Thank you for reading!
